Join our Smart Infrastructure division as an Engineering Manager within the RSS Utilities Branch delivering integrated control and technology solutions, projects and services across varied and complex customer site facilities and buildings. You will be responsible for the end-to-end engineering process including the design of all aspects of solutions for projects ranging from new construction site installations to refurbishments and asset refresh solutions. Technologies will include complex integrated Security systems (CCTV, Perimeter protection, access control intruder protection) Fire systems, building management systems, associated cabling equipment and integration with other systems and building services.

This is a fantastic role for an outstanding Engineering Manager who has the ability and track record in leading a small team, interpreting customer requirements to design and configure systems that combine our own and various 3rd party products into site-wide solutions including all ancillary devices, interconnecting cables and associated equipment. Designs will include the physical configuration of components, panel builds, coordination with other building services and digital cause & effect to meet customer-specified outputs and operational requirements.

A key part of the role is to provide an innovative approach to the ongoing development of the design and engineering process throughout the project and service lifecycle. Many of our customers operate in regulated sectors and are subject to an external third-party audit of designs prior to implementation where process, quality and accuracy of detail are paramount. In this role, you will have full responsibility for the end-to-end technical engineering process from sales concept through detailed design to completion, handover, and service. The role very much requires a “hands-on” approach as well as the management of a small team of up to 8 Design and Field Engineers.

What will you deliver?

  • Overall responsibility for the end-to-end engineering for the utility branch
  • Ensure design buildability and that installation and commissioning engineering activities to meet the design and client requirements through engineering audits and feedback.
  • Develop concept design and technical proposals for sales tenders
  • Motivate and develop a multi-disciplined engineering team
  • Responsible for design development and coordination for all projects.
  • Experience in design to build process
  • Ensure design compliance with contract requirements, industry practice and relevant legislation.
  • Lead design reviews, both internally and with our clients
  • Maximise digitalisation by ensuring the toolset reflects developments in the industry to keep the company at the forefront of design methodology.
  • Management of the design team and specialist consultants to ensure that all documentation is provided within the agreed programme and budget.
  • Review and scrutinise design drawings, specifications, and details for compliance to project
  • specifications, buildability, and value engineering options throughout all stages of the design process.
  • Receive, coordinate and check specialist subcontractor and supplier information.
  • Attend customer, specialist supplier and subcontract meetings as required.
  • Keep up to date with correct building products and techniques, current building regulations and relevant supplementary legislation that may impact the performance of the required duties.
  • Support sales with bid and tender activities and responses.
  • Management and control of the design process in the design development phase as well as installation and commissioning phases.
  • Assist in appointing and managing external design consultants to get the best possible result out of the consultants
  • Collaborate with project teams throughout the design process to provide clear and concise design information, monitoring design development to ensure the concept integrity is maintained

What skills and experience will you bring to the role?

  • Experience in electrical design, ideally qualified to BS 7671 18th Edition
  • Experience in designing systems that interface with every aspect of the site or building for
  • implementation within a construction environment complying with CDM regulations.
  • You will have a consistent track record of achieving business success as an Engineering Manager
  • Experience in leading and developing multi-discipline teams would be advantageous
  • An innovative approach to designs that add value to customers while maintaining efficiency
  • Experience in the implementation of processes and tools aligned with changing technologies.
  • Chartered engineer or working towards chartership
  • Degree in a relevant field, or demonstrable equivalent on-the-job experience
  • Experience working in a regulated environment and understanding design authorisation and approval process
  • Comfortable both in office environments as well as on construction sites
  • Technically adept, and able to communicate technical concepts at all levels.
