The Head of Product (HoP) is a critical leadership role. Relentlessly focused on understanding, anticipating and exceeding colleague and customer needs, the HoP creates, drives and champions the long-term vision for their product group to achieve the overarching business strategy. This product leader is a colleague and customer-centric motivator who inspires and coaches while guiding the organization in the pursuit of value growth.

The HoP for Technology Tools will have ownership and drive efficiencies and simplification throughout the tools clients need to do to do the job, developing and streamlining the product portfolio used for service, security, supporting infrastructure, communication channels, resources and financial planning.

The HoP defines and drives the use of product metrics to effectively prioritise within their organization and product group, and uses their data mindset to coach, challenge and guide their team and stakeholders to make data-driven decisions.​ Displaying a strong understanding of the commercial drivers that determine the viability and longevity of a product while considering the market context and clear definition of the business benefit of products.

The role holder engages in technical discussions, asks questions and challenges their teams to enable the creation of better technology solutions, utilizing a variety of techniques to develop a broad understanding of the tech landscape and customer expectations of technology.

What you need to do:

  • Lead the product management practice around Tools for Tech, developing a product team that delivers the vision of their products and achieves the strategic business goals
  • Ownership for the roadmap and backlog that balances the development of new features with activity to improve service stability, reduce tactical solutions and technical debt and decommission legacy tech
  • Bring together and present multiple product visions within the domain into a single coherent overview
  • Ensure teams are leveraging common thinking and technologies, enabling continual opportunity exploitation and market comparison
  • Set and define outcomes and metrics for principal areas
  • Aligning product visions to end propositions/brands
  • Refine and optimize within defined capital and requests support on priority or capacity contention
  • Work across divisions to shape-dependent roadmaps and features, escalating where prioritization trade-offs are needed across teams
  • Build strong relationships up to the CTO level to engage on the visions/roadmaps for their principal product areas
  • Lead and coach a team of senior product managers directly within your domain
  • Contribute and coach better product management across the division using product competencies and internal frameworks
  • Take the lead to trial and embed new practices, principles and tools
  • Accountable for nurturing talent in the team and fostering a learning culture and high trust
  • Cultivate, develop and maintain 3rd-party supplier relationships, supporting opportunities to grow and shrink relationships as required

What you need to know:

  • Knowledge and understanding of a retail business and the technology landscape, and how to maximize the value that products can and will add
  • Understanding of Agile delivery and modern engineering team practices
  • Knowledge of technical product development principles and methodologies
  • Knowledge of the systems and tools that are required to run a technology division, such as service, security, supporting infrastructure, communication channels, resources and financial planning
